A rare late-model Japanese motorhome combining permanent-bed comfort, serious off-grid capability and full-time 4WD — all in a remarkably compact 5.23-metre package.

Built by respected Japanese motorhome manufacturer ANNEX on the late-model Toyota Camroad GDY281 platform, the Liberty 52SP was designed around comfortable touring for two. Unlike layouts requiring the main living area to be converted every night, the 52SP features a permanent rear double bed, together with a separate dinette and additional cab-over sleeping accommodation.

The rear bedroom is particularly clever. The mattress incorporates a reclining section, allowing the right-hand side to be raised into a comfortable lounge-style position, while useful storage is incorporated beneath the bed.

For the 2023 model, ANNEX equipped the Liberty with an impressive factory electrical system built around two 240Ah lithium-ion batteries — 480Ah total capacity.

The system is complemented by 250W solar with MPPT charging, a 1,500W pure sine-wave inverter, alternator charging and external mains charging, giving the Liberty genuine capability away from powered sites.

A central ANNEX control system provides monitoring of important motorhome functions including battery condition, fresh and waste-water levels and interior/exterior temperature.

One of the Liberty's most unusual features is its sophisticated diesel-fired hydronic heating system.

Rather than relying on the Toyota engine for heat, an independent diesel-fired boiler heats and circulates coolant beneath the floor. The same system integrates with the motorhome's factory hot-water and rear cabin-heating systems.

Combined with the fitted room air conditioner, the Liberty has been engineered for comfortable touring across a remarkably wide range of climates.

The kitchen includes an 85-litre refrigerator with 12-litre freezer compartment, two-burner cooktop, sink, rangehood and factory microwave oven.

The Liberty also carries approximately 80 litres of fresh water and 80 litres of waste-water capacity.

Importantly, this particular vehicle has its own private shower and toilet compartment, including cassette toilet, vanity, mirror and an ingenious pull-out basin mixer that doubles as the shower handset.

Underneath is Toyota's late-model GDY281 Camroad 300 Series, powered by the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV common-rail turbo-diesel and six-speed automatic transmission.

This vehicle is the desirable full-time 4WD/AWD configuration with dual rear wheels, combining the security of the later Camroad chassis with the stability expected of a premium coachbuilt motorhome.

Toyota's later-generation safety technology includes features such as pre-collision assistance, lane-departure warning, vehicle stability and traction control, ABS/EBD, clearance sonar and automatic high beam.

Perhaps the Liberty's greatest achievement is how much ANNEX has packaged into such a compact motorhome.

At approximately 5.23 metres long and 2.04 metres wide, it provides a permanent bedroom, separate living area, kitchen, private bathroom, substantial lithium power, solar, heating, air conditioning and AWD without moving into the dimensions of a large conventional motorhome.
